Our History
Dr. Harold "Pete" Rankin
Harold "Pete" Rankin received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1960. Following internship and 2 years of service as a medic in the Air Force, he and his wife, Jan, moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1963 where he served as a family practice physician for 35 years. He founded the kidney dialysis unit at Henry County Health Center in 1969 and served as its medical director for 22 years. He was involved in the Kidney Foundation, serving as president of the National Kidney Foundation of Iowa from 1979-1981. He was awarded the Kidney Foundation Medical Advisory Board Person of the Year in 2003. He fostered a team spirit for dialysis care and treasured the relationships with patients and staff.
Who We Are
A Renal Dialysis Unit was established in 1969 at the Henry County Health Center. A community fund drive to help a local teenage boy who required hemodialysis treatments brought the therapy to the area. From that effort, the renal dialysis unit grew from serving one patient to serving almost 200 patients from Southeast Iowa, Northern Missouri, and Western Illinois.
In response to this growth, Southeastern Renal Dialysis began as a corporation in April of 1997. The corporation consists of Henry County Health Center, Great River Health Systems, Fort Madison Community Hospital, and Jefferson County Health Center.
